Nearly 20 Political Parties are Running for the 2022 Commune/District Council Election

PHNOM PENH: The National Election Committee (NEC) has announced that 17 political parties have registered their candidates to contest the Commune/District Council elections to be held on 5 June 2022.

The NEC stated that the political parties that have submitted a list of candidates are: Cambodian People's Party, Candle Light Party, FUNCINPEC, Khmer National United Party, Cambodia National Love Party, Cambodian Youth Party, Cambodian Nationality Party, Khmer Will Party, the Khmer Reform Party, KampucheaNiyum Party, Grassroots Democratic Party, Khmer United Party, Beehive Social Democratic Party, Cambodia Indigenous People Democracy Party, EkPheap Cheat Party, Reaksmey Khemara Party, Khmer Economic Development Party.

A total of 70,046 candidates, including 20,452 women, will be participating.

According to the NEC, the total number of Commune/District Councilors who will be elected through the 5th Mandate Commune/District Council election is 11,622 out of 1,652 communes. By 2021, more than 9,200,000 people are set to vote and there will be a total of 23,602 polling stations.

It should be noted that the registration of candidates of political parties for the election of Commune/District Councilors of the 5th Mandate 2022 lasted for 3 days from 4-6 March.

According to a report by the Ministry of Interior, since 1998 to the present day, 45 political parties have been properly registered and allowed to operate in Cambodia.
